Then and now: The Bear’s Den at U of Maine

On the heels of a forward-thinking renovation, a look back at dining design elements that had to go (POS lines that bottlenecked), and the timeless stuff that was too good to change (hint: pizza!).

Then and now, the Bear’s Den at the University of Maine in Orono, serves as a center-of-campus retail location inside the bustling student union. It’s remained a busy spot through the years, with a lot of traffic from nearby academic buildings and the library, averaging about 2,200 transactions per day. Last summer, the Bear’s Den closed for 12 weeks of upgrades to the floors, lighting, equipment, counters, technology and more.
