Austin schools bring scratch-made breakfast into the classroom

Students and teachers break bread together and see improvements in tardiness, absences, behavior, illness and focus.

When Anneliese Tanner started as Austin Independent School District nutrition and food services director, serving breakfast in the classroom was her No. 1 priority. “Equity and food access are important school values,” says Tanner. “Making sure all students have access to a heathy breakfast to start their day has been my focus since I walked in the door.”
