In some ways, the University of Richmond campus is a considerable hike from the city's downtown. It’s about eight miles away, for starters. But a new café in the downtown is becoming a jumping-off point for the two communities to break bread and get acquainted.
The café, now in its third month, is located at 626 E. Broad St., a busy intersection of the downtown near business and entertainment venues. The café, housed in an old bank building, is offering fresh, fast, healthful food (about 250-275 covers a day) to a mix of customers.
A small number of UR offices are located in the same building as the café, with students, faculty and staff in the UR Downtown community outreach program providing free legal services to those in need and several other social services.
But providing foodservice to that group is just one part of the plan, says Dee Hardy, associate vice president of campus services.
