Coffee goes high tech at Virginia Tech

Forget basic coffee shops, and even premium national branded chain outlets. Here’s one university where this staple beverage is a matter of science, technology and expertise.

Earlier this year, Allen Gusler received his final certification from the Academy of Coffee Excellence (ACE) in Williamsburg, Va., after qualifying with 1,600 hours of roasting experience. It’s the third level of training for Gusler, who serves as professional coffee roaster for Virginia Tech Dining Services. Virginia Tech claims Gusler’s certification makes it the only university in the country with a full-time master roaster on staff.
