The College of the Holy Cross Dining recently launched Kimball to Kitchen, an online grocery ordering program specifically designed for students living in apartments. It allows students who wish to prepare meals in their apartments to purchase raw ingredients using their meal plan’s dining dollars.
Orders are placed online and picked up in Kimball Hall, the main dining hall. The items come out of the dining hall’s inventory.
The program is a convenience as there are no commercial grocery stores near campus, says Kathy Egan, assistant director of wellness and promotions. “Plus, I like the fact that it encourages young adults with no cooking experience to try it.” Egan adds that she plans to start holding cooking classes next spring for students who want to know how to use the groceries they order to best advantage.
Each grocery bag order costs 20 dining dollars and must be placed 24 hours in advance. Students are able to choose up to six items from a set shopping list to fill their order. Available items include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, pasta, rice, soy and rice milk, chicken breasts and steak (which counts as two items). Pick up is during normal business hours and orders are packed each morning by Holy Cross Dining staff so they’re available for pickup at the students’ chosen time.
