Houston Independent School District fills food service job vacancies with special education students

Betti Wiggins says the program brings benefits to the school meal program and the community.

Houston Independent School District (HISD) students with developmental disabilities have the chance to receive on-the-job training through various internships as part of their high school curriculum. As an expansion of those opportunities, the district’s Nutrition Services department recently started a transition program to offer long-term employment in foodservice positions to those students after graduation.
