San Francisco Schools FSD Retires

San Francisco USD Nutrition Services Director Ed Wilkins is retiring after 16 years with the district, the last eight as director during which he oversaw the way the department operates.

Ed Wilkins, director of nutrition services for the San Francisco USD, is retiring at the end of the current school year after 16 years with the district, half of them as director. Wilkins was instrumental in guiding SFUSD to completely change the way in which it provided meals to the district's students, partly through his role in a pilot program 10 years ago at one middle school that experimented with selling higher quality options such as salads, yogurt and fresh fruit.

Most recently, he had shepherded through a contract with Revolution Foods to supply meals to SFUSD Schools.

In a recent interview with, Wilkins suggested that the government should reimburse a high-cost district like SFUSD as much as $6 a meal in order to get sufficient quality to students receiving free school meals.
