Nearly 300 Iowa City parents have signed a petition to get more organic, locally grown food into the district’s school lunches, reports the Des Moines Register. District foodservice officials are sympathetic but note that such product is considerably more expensive than what is purchased now. The Better Iowa City School Food committee’s petition asks the Iowa City school board to implement a wellness policy requiring schools to use fresh, locally grown and organic ingredients "to the extent possible." The Iowa City school district serves about 6,200 lunches daily and has an annual food and milk budget of $1.5 million.
