Art Contest Helps Kids Learn About Fruits and Veggies

Annual event at Manatee County (Fla.) Schools challenges elementary students to make animals out of fresh produce as educational tool.

Students in the Manatee County (Fla.) Public Schools used fruits and vegetables to create animal artworks as a way of familiarizing themselves with the products served in district cafeterias, reports the Bradenton Herald. The fifth annual Play With Your Fruits and Vegetables Contest, run by the district's Food & Nutrition Services Dept., is open to all Manatee elementary schools and uses produce purchased specially for the event. The rules require that the artwork picturing anything from a dog to a duck be constructed exclusively out of edible objects. The finished creations are then displayed in school cafeterias where students vote for the best.
