Brown Launches Compost Pilot at One Site

Initiative is first step toward comprehensive program across all dining halls by January 2016.

Brown University has launched an 11-week composting pilot program at its Andrews Commons  facility in preparation for introducing mandatory composting in every dining hall by January 2016, reports the Brown Daily Herald. The push for composting is driven by the Rhode Island Refuse Disposal Law, which requires institutions to compost if they generate more than two tons of organic waste per week beginning Jan. 1, 2016. Under the program, disposables like utensils and cups will be replaced with alternatives made of compostable materials.
