Harvard Dining Establishes Excess Food Donation Program

Partnership with Food for Free means about 2,500 lbs. of food go to local shelters and pantries instead of the garbage.

Harvard University Dining Services has entered into a partnership to give up to 2,500 pounds of excess food from dining halls to local community organizations each week, reports the Harvard Crimson campus paper. Food For Free, which collects and distributes food that would otherwise be left to waste to shelters and pantries, partnered with Harvard Dining on a pilot of the program in one dining venue last summer and has now expanded it to all dining halls. Food that falls under certain guidelines is frozen and bagged for collection. It does not include leftovers from student plates.
