1887 Bistro, opened in NC State’s Talley Student Union in September, was designed to provide a finedining option for weekday lunch and a lateevening gathering spot where students could commune over shareable appetizers, flatbreads and desserts. The 118seat restaurant, named for the year the university was founded, features sweeping views of the campus and a combination of booth, table and counter seating, where guests can watch and interact with the culinary team. The centerpiece is a shiny, stainless steel woodstone oven for baking flatbreads and crostadas.
Serving lunch weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., 1887 Bistro features a menu that combines refined taste with Southern tradition. Lunch guests have their choice of items such as fresh salads layered in mason jars, smoked beef brisket sandwiches, a pork belly BLT, flatbreads and coffeerubbed beef medallions.
The restaurant reopens from 9 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday with a menu of easily shareable appetizers and desserts such as buffalo chicken dip, pork belly sliders, firecracker shrimp, chimichurri steak skewers and Southwest eggrolls.
University Dining’s awardwinning bakery contributes special desserts such as a housemade crostada (served piping hot) and a flight of lemon mousse, Grand Marnier creme brulee and hazelnut pot de creme.
The dynamic space is also a perfect spot for events such as culinary demonstrations, food lectures and receptions and can be reserved for afternoon and early evening events.
