Renovation plan changes responding to the COVID crisis included adding more sanitizer stations scattered around the 20,000-square-foot McCall facility.
The social distancing and other safety measure messages are numerous and prominent.
Tables and chairs are spaced out to conform to CDC guidelines about social distancing, with the result that a dining center originally intended to seat nearly 700 temporarily has a capacity capped at 175, with seating on a first-come first-served basis.
Booths accommodating up to four and tables up to two are available for small gatherings of roommates and other groups of individuals who only need to distance from others.
Everything is staff-served, with many dishes made to order.
Diners make their own seating choices, and dining crews are ready to clean and sanitize tables when they leave to get ready for the next guest.
One highlight of the renovated McCalll’s dining choices is the comfort/soul food concept 1901 Bistro, formerly a staple campus retail outlet that is now available as an all-you-care-to-eat option.
The choices also include Sodexo’s Simple Servings concept, which offers dishes devoid of the most common food allergens.
The vegetarian station lets diners assemble meals to order from an array of meatless components.
What would a college dining venue be without pizza, except the pies in McCall are made in a new brick oven.
The granary station offers a variety of baked goods like breads, muffins and bagels, plus toppings like butter, jam and cream cheese.
Pies sitting in the dessert station display case. Like the other stations, these are handed to customers by staff instead of the traditional self-serve system for such fare in college residential dining halls.
The deli station display, where most sandwiches are made to order from the variety of meat, cheese and bread choices.
The game room area gives students an outlet for relaxation, though with distancing protocols still in place.
The performance stage in McCall will be active through the spring to provide some entertainment for students.
