Napa State Hospital is a 1,200-bed psychiatric hospital serving civil and forensic patients with a centralized main kitchen and 10 satellite dining rooms. The food preparation utilizes a cook-chill system with the food re-thermalized in the dining rooms, as most of the patient meal service is provided in a cafeteria style.

The four-to-five-week cycle patient menu has been recently changed to provide healthy dining options, and regular input is encouraged and obtained through patient satisfaction surveys. Other patient health and wellness initiatives begun this year include vending options, food served at special events and food patients can purchase from outside sources.

A new 29,000-square-foot main kitchen is currently under construction. This will be the first new building on the grounds of the historic hospital in 50 years.

Like the other psychiatric hospitals in the California State system, Napa does not offer retail dining to staff or visitors.
