Netza Salgado, Catering Supervisor
Nominator: Thomas Thaman, Director of Food and Nutrition
“Netza Salgado is the catering supervisor at Eskenazi Health. Netza has been employed at Eskenazi for eight years and has always put the customer and service first and foremost. This was especially demonstrated throughout the year as our team transitioned from their normal jobs to serving both the staff and the community.
When the initial shutdown was announced in Indiana in March of 2020, all catering at Eskenazi Health was drastically reduced. To service our nursing and physician staff during their many long hours in the early days of the pandemic, Netza assisted in setting up ‘recharge rooms’ throughout the hospital where staff could get a snack or beverage without leaving the unit and could ‘break away’ from the their dedicated care to the patient. Fifteen recharge rooms were set up seven days a week consisting of soft drinks, energy drinks, iced coffee and a variety of healthy snacks. Several local Indianapolis restaurants donated meals for our healthcare team and Netza worked closely with them on deliveries and transported the food from the restaurants to the hospital.
Once the first surge subsided in late May, Netza and his team were key members assisting with the distribution of pantry boxes to combat food insecurity in a collaborative initiative between Eskenazi Health and Gleaners Foodbank of Indiana through the USDA’s Farmers for Families Program. The distribution was at three sites in the Indianapolis area. Distribution began in June three days a week, Monday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Netza and his team’s responsibility was to set up the areas for distribution, transport the pantry boxes from Gleaners Foodbank and assist with passing them out to those in need. Netza even delivered pantry boxes to homes. The weekly distribution continued through the balance of 2020 and into 2021. To date, Netza has assisted passing out almost 55,000 pantry boxes to those in need.
We could not have taken on this extremely complex community service initiative without Netza’s dedication to serving those in need throughout this pandemic. He represents the many ‘unsung’ heroes in healthcare this past year who helped heal and nourish those affected through this most difficult time.”
