Dearborn Heights (MI) District 7 has made up more than $100,000 in revenues, going from a loss to a surplus in one year by eliminating universal free meals, reports the Press and Guide. The 2,800-student, six-school district had lost $89,000 by the end of January 2012 after implementing a program to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students. Over the same period this year, it had a surplus of $23,000 after reverting to a policy of offering free and reduced price lunches only to those eligible due to family income levels.
