Only three states—Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota—have agreed to continue to source beef containing "finely textured beef" (sometimes referred to as "pink slime" by opponents of its use) from the USDA for their school lunch programs, according to USA Today. The Agriculture Dept. had given states the option of purchasing beef with or with out the additive, which has been used for decades and is considered safe by federal regulators, but which has recently come under fire because the additive is treated with ammonia to kill pathogens.
