After touting their implementation, Boston City Schools has closed down its salad bar program due to escalating costs, reports the Boston Globe. The deficit ridden school meals program, which has lost $3.6 million in each of the past two years, had implemented salad bars donated by the Let's Move Salad Bars to Schools initiative, several years ago with considerable fanfare. However, they began to be phased out as early as the 2011-12 school year and the district stopped stocking them altogether beginning with the 2013-14 school year. A district spokesperson termed the initiative a pilot program that was deemed unsuccessful due costs of operation and difficulties with meeting state and local health regulations.
